چکیده

• The strength of myocardial contraction is influenced directly and strongly by the intervals separating individual beats. The large number of studies on this phenomenon during the 95 years since its original recognition have recently been reviewed. Interval-dependent changes in the strength and time course of contraction result both from alterations in the duration of the active state and from changes in the degree of activation of the contractile element (shifts of the force-velocity curve). Every activation of mammalian myocardium appears to leave behind two temporary changes in the muscle that have opposing effects on the degree of activation in subsequent beats.' The extent of cumulation of both changes depends on rate and rhythm of contraction, and the interaction of their respective levels of cumulation can account for all interval-dependent variations in the degree of activation. In ventricular heart muscle of most mammalian species the degree of activation and the rate of tension development in an isometric contraction increase steadily with frequency over the entire physiologic range.'

[Post-extrasystolic potentiation in chronic Chagas' heart disease. A radiologic contrast ventriculography study].

OBJECTIVE To determine the existence and frequency of the phenomenon of post-extrasystolic potentiation in dyssynergic myocardial areas of patients with chronic Chagas' heart disease studied by use of radiologic contrast ventriculography. METHODS This study is a semiquantitative retrospective analysis of radiologic contrast ventriculography in patients with chronic Chagas' disease, who were c...

Coronary vasodilation after a single ventricular extra-activation in the conscious dog.

This study was undertaken to determine if coronary blood flow can be regulated in response to a transient increase in cardiac metabolic demand. Eight conscious dogs with experimentally produced complete heart block, a chronically implanted electromagnetic flow probe on the left circumflex coronary artery, and fluid-filled catheters for measurement of left ventricular and aortic pressures were s...

Intracellular calcium and myocardial contractility. II. Effects of postextrasystolic potentiation in the isolated rabbit heart.

Postextrasystolic potentiation was studied in the isolated perfused rabbit heart to determine its effect on intracellular calcium, sodium, and potassium concentration, 6Ca uptake, and calcium distribution in mitochondria and microsomes. Paired stimulation at 80/min augmented myocardial contractility with a gradually developing increase in total intracellular calcium and sodium. A greater Ca upt...

Relations Between Myocardial Blood Flow and Postextrasystolic Potentiation in Epicardial and Endocardial Left Ventricular Regions

Postextrasystolic potentiation was studied during control and 5 minutes after coronary occlusion in epicardial and endocardial regions of 12.open-chest dogs. Segmental behavior evaluated with ultrasonic crystals. was correlated with regional myocardial blood flow (MBF) measured with radioactive inicrospheres. A similar correlation was found between the percentage of systolic shortening in poste...
